KIDS IN THE NEWS
Six year old Archaeologists !! Yes, even that young you can be a great partner in cultural preservation. This past October 2001, two young visitors to SunWatch Indian Village/Archaeological Park, Dane and Jake both age 6, made an archaeological discovery. Their sharp eyes saw something made of stone lying at the base of a tree. Having learned from their parents that archaeological artifacts (items made by man long ago) belong to everyone, and they should be in museums for all to enjoy and learn about, they immediately turned it in to the Site Archaeologist here at SunWatch, and described its location in fine detail.
Guess what they found ! A stone spear point about 7000 years old ! It belongs to the Archaic time period and is probably of the MacCorkle style of points (Chris Bergman, personal communication). You can see it in the picture below.
Good work boys ! Congratulations for finding this beautiful point, and mostly congratulations for your fine work in turning it in to the museum for all future generations to enjoy. It is catalogued and curated (stored safely) at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, with all the other SunWatch artifacts for scientific study.
Thank You both very much.
So, the next time you are out hiking, camping, or exploring, just keep your eyes open and your minds alert. You, too, may discover an important part of mankind's past that you can contribute to your local museum or college for EVERYONE'S benefit, enjoyment, and education. Thank you Dane and Jake.
